Guard columns and retention gaps are widely used in gas chromatography for different reasons. A guard column traps nonvolatile material at the head of the column, not allowing it to reach the analytical column, protecting it. A retention gap helps focus the compounds transferred from the inlet as a small band at the head of the analytical column to minimize chromatographic peak broadening. Siltek-treated, stainless-steel MXT guard columns provide excellent compatibility with MXT analytical columns while offering the strength of metal with the inertness of glass.
